What to Do When a Certificate Expires
A measured checklist for following up when a certificate shows an expired policy date or an update has not arrived.
Confirm what expired
Check the policy row and date on the certificate. One policy may have expired while another remains within its listed dates. A certificate may also be outdated even if a policy was renewed after it was issued.
Request updated information
Contact the vendor and ask for a current certificate from its insurance agent. Include:
- The policy type or date that needs clarification.
- The contract or project requirement the document should address.
- A reasonable response date based on your process and the work schedule.
- A request for the relevant endorsement or direct insurer confirmation, if required.
Follow the written agreement
Record your request and the response. Do not infer that an expired date proves there is no coverage, or that a new certificate alone resolves every requirement. Review the contract and consult the insurer, agent, or legal adviser when the next step has consequences.
