Does a COI Prove That Coverage Is Active?

Learn what a certificate can show about policy dates and why it is not conclusive proof of current coverage.

A certificate is a snapshot

A certificate of insurance reports selected policy information as of its issue date. It can show policy dates and limits, but it is not the policy itself and may not reflect a later cancellation, change, exclusion, or lapse.

What to verify when current status matters

Use the certificate as a starting point and confirm the current facts:

  • Check the policy dates shown against the date of the work or access.
  • Ask the vendor or its agent to confirm current status for the relevant policy.
  • Request the policy or endorsement language if a specific term or status is important.
  • Compare any answer with the exact contract requirement and the applicable dates.

Keep the distinction clear

A certificate does not create, extend, or guarantee coverage. The insurer, policy terms, endorsements, and facts determine coverage. For a decision with legal or financial consequences, consult the appropriate insurance or legal professional.
